For Nairobi residents and visitors, Lukenya Motorcross quad biking challenge is your ultimate escape from the hustles and bustles of the city as well as experiencing some adrenaline rush somewhere not so far away from the city.
For the newbies, Lukenya Motorcross have trainers who carefully train you and make sure you have a safe and fun ride. Even those who have not rode a motorbike or a car before, don’t sweat. You will be trained and within no time you’ll be riding like a pro.
Lukenya Motorcross is located only 45 minutes by road from Nairobi city centre in Athi River just in the foot of Lukenya Hills. The route is straightforward and it’s more convenient to drive there; the road from Mombasa road is good for a normal saloon car.
It is however tricky to get there by public transport because of the distance from the main road. Another means would be to hire a taxi from Nairobi to Lukenya. This can be expensive though.
Of all my adventurous escapades, this is the only quad biking I have done that runs through a National park. Just to remind you that Nairobi is the only capital city in the world that has a national park.
Meander through the grassy foot of Lukenya Hills terrain as you watch giraffes, zebras and antelopes feed in a thrilling ride through mud, water, shrubs and rocky areas.
A 30 minutes ATV ride on the foot of Lukenya hills will cost you Kes. 2,500 ($25), with a 1-hour ride going for Kes. 5,000($50)
Bookings can be done online and payment made via Mpesa pay bill number 970036. One can also call their mobile number and make the booking then pay cash on arrival. The latter is only advisable for small groups, for your own convenience.
What to carry
- Sunglasses or safety glasses. Since you will be riding in the wild, this is to protect your eyes from dust, mud and loose sand pebbles
- Hand Gloves if you have them. Not a must though
- Drinking water although they have a restaurant where you can buy water and food.
On the down side…
I always believe when you put too many rules for adults you’re definitely spoiling the party. Lukenya Motorcross have put too many unnecessary rules. The most annoying one, in my opinion, is that guide on a boda boda (ordinary motorbike) who rides with you and you’re not allowed to overtake him. So in short an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) needs to drive behind an ordinary motorbike? The motorbike obviously doesn’t go as fast. Come on guys, that automatically ceases to be an adrenaline rush activity, which is what we came for.
Safety glasses and helmets are not provided. I consider it a safety measure if Lukenya Motorcross provides returnable helmets and safety glasses. They are a necessity.
Now you have a plot for the weekend!
